Fertility Counselling

Needing help to conceive can be a daunting process and is often never discussed. It can be very difficult to talk with Friends, family and work colleagues, and you might find the stress and anxiety will affect your relationship with your partner. Fertility tests and investigations can pry into uncomfortable areas. Fertility counselling is a very important aspect that should not be overlooked and we pride ourselves to give you the support and care throughout your time with us.

We find that having some private time and or space from one another with a counsellor is not about coping. It is to understand the issues you face together and alone that you face now. Expressing anger, desperation, grief or envy can help you cope on a day to day basis, but being able to speak to someone can help you relieve these issues. Sometimes you may want to show excitement, relief and joy if the treatment is successful.

OXRM Counsellors compile with regulatory guidelines set by the British Infertility Counselling Association (BICA) and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Your personal information you disclose is completely confidential and will not be used or passed to any other member of staff unless it causes concern about your health or others around you. Our counsellor will discuss with you first, and find the best possible way forward.

The BICA and BACP requirements that your counsellor is independently supervised, outside every counselling sessions.  In this case, information might be anonymously shared with their supervisor as part of their continuing professional development.

Finding out that you have a fertility problem?

Infertility requires mental and physical rollercoaster, and for you and your partner, it’s important you prepare yourselves for the journey ahead. The most common emotions patients face are shock, anger, denial, anxiety and depression. All of these emotions are completely normal and is normal for all fertility treatments.

How do you make the decision?

Making decisions is an integral part of the infertility experience. Within a couple, the individual who has the specific medical problem can feel under increased pressure when it comes to expressing what they want. It is important that you feel free to do this. Men sometimes feel worried about choosing a type of treatment that requires invasive techniques, such as surgery or daily injections, for their partners. Other couples may find that they have different rules of play regarding the time, effort and money that they are considering dedicating to treatment. At other times, the decision about when to say “enough” can be one of the most difficult things to discuss. We know that in any couple there may be differences of opinion or difficulties in the relationship when faced with a problem. Do not hesitate to ask for advice from our psychologists, who will help you to search for solutions.
